Erin Schuman (born in 1963 in California) studied at USC, Princeton, and Stanford, joined the Biology Faculty at Caltech in 1993, and was a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 1997 to 2009. In 2009, she co-founded the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt. She is a member of EMBO and numerous national academies and has received major international awards, including the Brain Prize andthe HFSP Nakasone Prize (2026).

His research focuses on local protein synthesis and degradation in neuronal synapses, clarifying how decentralized gene expression enables synaptic plasticity.
